ENERGY STAR is a joint EPA / Department of Energy certification program that identifies appliances meeting strict efficiency standards. For HVAC, the ENERGY STAR label means the equipment exceeds federal minimum efficiency standards by a meaningful margin.
For Colorado homeowners, the practical importance is that most Xcel Energy rebates and the Colorado state heat pump tax credit require ENERGY STAR certified equipment. A furnace, AC, or heat pump without an ENERGY STAR label often doesn’t qualify for the larger rebate amounts. (The federal 25C tax credit, which also leaned on this label, expired December 31, 2025 — see our rebate tracker for what’s still active.)
ENERGY STAR Most Efficient
A subset of ENERGY STAR-certified products carry the “Most Efficient” designation — typically the top 10% by efficiency in their category. For HVAC, this usually means SEER2 18+, AFUE 95+, or HSPF2 9.0+. Some utility rebate tiers, including Xcel’s, target this level specifically.
