Heat Recovery Ventilator — like an ERV but transfers heat only, not moisture. Less common in Colorado homes.

An HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) brings outdoor air in and exhausts indoor air, transferring heat between the two streams (but not moisture). Useful for humid climates where you want to keep indoor moisture out.

For Colorado’s dry climate, an ERV is usually the better choice — it preserves indoor humidity that we want to keep. HRVs make sense in basement spaces with chronic moisture issues or for indoor pools / spas where humidity needs to be exhausted.

HRV in Colorado: where it makes sense

  • Homes with chronic basement humidity
  • Indoor pools or hot tubs
  • Wood-shop spaces with finishing or solvent fumes
  • New tight construction with high occupant load
