Manual J is the industry-standard load calculation method (published by ACCA — Air Conditioning Contractors of America) for determining how much heating and cooling capacity a home actually needs. It’s not optional — it’s the only correct way to size HVAC equipment.
What Manual J considers
- Square footage and ceiling heights
- Window count, orientation, glass type, shading
- Wall, attic, and basement insulation R-values
- Air infiltration rate
- Internal heat gains (occupants, appliances, electronics)
- Local outdoor design conditions (Denver: 1°F winter, 91°F summer)
- Altitude derate — critical for Colorado, often skipped
Why “rule of thumb” sizing fails in Colorado
“30 BTU per square foot” charts don’t account for altitude. Combustion efficiency drops 4% per 1,000 feet of elevation. A furnace sized by rule-of-thumb for Denver is significantly underpowered for Evergreen. Manual J builds altitude into the calculation.
A Properly Sized System
Runs longer cycles (5-15 minutes, not 90 seconds), maintains temperature evenly, dehumidifies better, and lasts 3-5 years longer than an oversized system that short-cycles itself to death.
