NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is the HVAC industry’s most rigorous voluntary technician certification. NATE-certified technicians have passed a comprehensive exam covering installation, service, and equipment knowledge across multiple equipment categories.
Why NATE matters
- Manufacturer-recognized credential (Carrier, Trane, Lennox prefer NATE-certified installers)
- Required for some warranty registrations
- Often required for top-tier rebate eligibility

NATE specialties
NATE has multiple specialty exams: Air Conditioning, Heat Pumps, Gas Furnaces, Oil Furnaces, Hydronics, Air Distribution, and others. A technician can hold one or several. Asking which specialty a certified tech holds tells you what they’re best at.
Different from EPA 608
NATE is a competence certification — voluntary, industry-driven. EPA 608 is a federal legal requirement for refrigerant handling. Reputable technicians hold both.
