R-410A (brand name “Puron”) was the standard residential refrigerant for systems sold from roughly 2010 to 2024. It has zero ozone-depletion potential, replacing the banned R-22, but a relatively high Global Warming Potential (GWP ~2,088).
If your AC or heat pump was installed between 2010 and 2024, it almost certainly uses R-410A. It will continue to be serviceable for many years — recharges are not expensive (~$30-$50/lb wholesale), parts are readily available, and EPA regulations don’t prohibit ongoing service.
R-410A is being phased out
Manufacturing of new R-410A equipment is being phased out in favor of lower-GWP refrigerants like R-454B and R-32, but existing R-410A systems will be supportable for at least another decade. There’s no urgent reason to replace a working R-410A system.
R-410A leak handling
The same rules apply as any refrigerant: leaks must be found and repaired before recharging. EPA 608 certification required. Refrigerant pressure and weight specs must be followed precisely.
