What’s Not an Emergency (And Can Save You Money)
We’re not going to charge you the emergency rate when there’s a simpler answer. Some “emergencies” are actually quick checks you can do yourself:

- No heat? Check thermostat batteries. Check that the thermostat is set to HEAT and above current temp. Check that the furnace switch (looks like a light switch near the unit) is ON.
- No cool air? Check the breaker — both indoor and outdoor units have separate breakers. Check the thermostat is set to COOL.
- System won’t start at all? Check the filter. A severely clogged filter triggers the safety switch.
- Strange noise? If the system still runs and produces conditioned air, schedule a daytime service call instead of after-hours emergency.

Is a yellow furnace flame dangerous?
Yes — a yellow furnace flame indicates incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide. The burner flame should be steady blue, with maybe small yellow tips. Persistent yellow flame should be diagnosed immediately.
What different flame colors mean
- Steady blue with small yellow tips — normal, healthy combustion
- Mostly yellow, flickering — incomplete combustion, producing carbon monoxide
- Orange or red — dust or rust being burned off (briefly OK), or a serious gas pressure issue
- Flame rolling out of the burner box — emergency. Shut the system off, leave the home, call us
Common causes of a yellow flame
- Dirty burners — carbon, dust, or rust restricting the gas-air mix
- Incorrect gas pressure (low pressure = sluggish flame)
- Cracked heat exchanger pulling combustion air into the wrong place
- Insufficient combustion air (closed combustion air vent, blocked intake)
- Improper venting causing back-draft

Make sure your CO detectors are working. Don’t sleep in the home if anyone has been getting headaches. Call us for a same-day or emergency diagnostic. Most yellow-flame issues are fixable in one visit — burner cleaning, gas pressure adjustment, or combustion-air correction — but they all need a tech with a combustion analyzer to do safely.
