EPA 608 certification is a U.S. federal requirement under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Any technician working on equipment containing refrigerant — that’s every AC, heat pump, mini-split, and refrigerator in the country — must hold this certification. Working without it is illegal and carries fines up to $44,539 per violation.
The four certification levels
- Type I — small appliances (5 lb or less of refrigerant): home refrigerators, window ACs
- Type II — high-pressure systems: residential central AC, heat pumps, commercial
- Type III — low-pressure systems: industrial chillers, etc.
- Universal — all of the above. The standard certification for residential HVAC techs.
Always Ask Before Refrigerant Work
Despite being federal law, plenty of “handymen” and uncertified workers offer cheap AC repair. Always ask any tech for proof of EPA 608 certification before they connect a refrigerant gauge to your system. The certification card has a unique technician number.
