What is a cracked heat exchanger and is it dangerous?
Yes — a cracked heat exchanger is one of the most serious furnace problems you can have, because it can leak carbon monoxide into your home. A cracked heat exchanger almost always means the furnace needs to be replaced or have the heat exchanger replaced (which is often comparable in cost to a new furnace).
What a heat exchanger does
The heat exchanger is the metal chamber inside your furnace where combustion happens. Hot combustion gases stay on the inside of the metal walls; the house air being heated passes over the outside of those walls. The two air streams should never mix. When the metal cracks — usually from years of heating and cooling cycles — combustion gases (including carbon monoxide) can leak into the air being blown through your home.
